External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or eSATA

External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or eSATA is an external interface for SATA technologies. It competes with FireWire 400 and universal serial bus (USB) 2.0 to provide fast data transfer speeds for external storage devices.

SATA replaced ATA legacy technology as the next generation internal bus interface for hard drives. The SATA interface is more streamlined than ATA and provides serial architecture for greater speed than the older parallel technology. eSATA cables are narrow and can be up to 6.56 feet (2 meters) in length, whereas parallel cables are much wider and limited to a length of 18 inches (45.7 cm). With eSATA, the speed of SATA expands to encompass exterior storage solutions.

While eSATA reaches transfer rates of at least triple those of USB 2.0 and FireWire 400, it does have one drawback. eSATA requires its own power connector, unlike the aforementioned interfaces. It is still an excellent choice for external disk storage, however. Unlike USB and FireWire interfaces, eSATA does not have to translate data between the interface and the computer. This enhances data transfer speeds, while saving computer processor resources and eliminating the need for an extra off-load chip.

For desktop motherboards that don't have an eSATA connector, a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) card can be purchased and installed in an available PCI slot that will provide an eSATA interface. Notebooks can use an external eSATA device made for the PCMCIA, PC Card, or ExpressCard slot, depending on the laptop model. eSATA enables use of fast SATA drives for external disk arrays, not only expanding valuable storage real estate, but also enabling truly fast portable storage. eSATA's hot-swappable feature makes taking disks from work to home, or from one computer to another, easy. Administrators, IT techs, advertising and marketing executives, and even gamers may find this beneficial.

SATA has differing standards, with older hardware supporting the original standard exclusively. With each new SATA iteration, speed increases. Original SATA, or SATA 150, has a data transfer speed of 150 megabytes per second (MB/s). SATA 3G doubled the speed to 300 MB/s or about 3 GB/s. This is also sometimes referred to as SATA 300.

When purchasing an eSATA controller or bus card, be sure it supports the SATA standard required by your SATA hard drive(s). Hardware that supports newer standards is usually backwards compatible with older devices, but the reverse does not hold. An eSATA controller made for SATA 150, for example, will not be able to support the faster transfer speeds of a SATA 300 hard drive.

What is a Dual Core Processor?

A dual core processor is a CPU with two separate cores on the same die, each with its own cache. It's the equivalent of getting two microprocessors in one.

In a single-core or traditional processor the CPU is fed strings of instructions it must order, execute, then selectively store in its cache for quick retrieval. When data outside the cache is required, it is retrieved through the system bus from random access memory (RAM) or from storage devices. Accessing these slows down performance to the maximum speed the bus, RAM or storage device will allow, which is far slower than the speed of the CPU. The situation is compounded when multi-tasking. In this case the processor must switch back and forth between two or more sets of data streams and programs. CPU resources are depleted and performance suffers.

In a dual core processor each core handles incoming data strings simultaneously to improve efficiency. Just as two heads are better than one, so are two hands. Now when one is executing the other can be accessing the system bus or executing its own code. Adding to this favorable scenario, both AMD and Intel's dual-core flagships are 64-bit.

To utilize a dual core processor, the operating system must be able to recognize multi-threading and the software must have simultaneous multi-threading technology (SMT) written into its code. SMT enables parallel multi-threading wherein the cores are served multi-threaded instructions in parallel. Without SMT the software will only recognize one core. Adobe® Photoshop® is an example of SMT-aware software. SMT is also used with multi-processor systems common to servers.

A dual core processor is different from a multi-processor system. In the latter there are two separate CPUs with their own resources. In the former, resources are shared and the cores reside on the same chip. A multi-processor system is faster than a system with a dual core processor, while a dual core system is faster than a single-core system, all else being equal.

An attractive value of dual core processors is that they do not require a new motherboard, but can be used in existing boards that feature the correct socket. For the average user the difference in performance will be most noticeable in multi-tasking until more software is SMT aware. Servers running multiple dual core processors will see an appreciable increase in performance.

Multi-core processors are the goal and as technology shrinks, there is more "real-estate" available on the die. In the fall of 2004 Bill Siu of Intel predicted that current accommodating motherboards would be here to stay until 4-core CPUs eventually force a changeover to incorporate a new memory controller that will be required for handling 4 or more cores.

Connecting to Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter More Secure

It is common these days to be using web services on a wireless network or from a phone. When you are in a public place, there is the possible danger of someone eavesdropping on what you are doing. (See Gizmo's discussion of the perils.) If you use the ordinary unencrypted HTTP protocol, almost anyone could be an uninvited observer of your web activities. There is even a simple extension for Firefox called Firesheep that uses a packet sniffer to intercept unencrypted cookies.

When using sites with personal information, the more secure encrypted protocol HTTPS should be used. HTTPS connections can be a little slower on some connections but the security is worth it. Many major services have implemented settings to use this protocol and this tip gives the procedure for three of the big ones—Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter.

Use HTTPS for Gmail

One way to employ HTTPS is simply to always use the address https://mail.google.com. Another method is to change a setting in your Gmail account. Here is the procedure:

1. Go to your Gmail page
2. In the top right side of the Gmail page, click on "Settings"
3. In the Settings box that opens, click on “General” if it is not already selected
4. Find “Browser connection” in the list of options
5. Select the button “Always use https”
6. Scroll down and click “Save changes”

HTTPS for Facebook

1. Log in to your Facebook account
2. Go to “Account” at the top right corner of the page.
3. In the dropdown menu for “Account” click “Account Settings”
4. Look for the “Account Security” section
5. Click “Change”
6. Put a check by “Secure Browsing (https)”
7. Click "Save"

There is a catch, however. Some Facebook pages require regular HTTP to connect. If you try to open one of them, you’ll be asked if you want to switch to HTTP. If you do switch, you’ll have to go back to the account settings to reinstitute HTTPS after you are finished with using HTTP.

HTTPS for Twitter

1. Log into your Twitter account
2. Open the dropdown menu under your account name
3. Click “Settings”
4. In the "Account Settings" that opens scroll down and check the box next to “Always use HTTPS”
5. Click “Save”
6. Reenter your password
7. Click “Save changes”

Use browser extensions to enable HTTPS

There are also some browser extensions that can be used to enable HTTPS. For example, the well known NoScript for Firefox is one. Chiron also mentions HTTPS Everywhere for Firefox and Use HTTPS for Chrome.

Using HTTPS is only one layer of the multi-layer defense that these times demand but each layer adds that much more protection.

Tips for Creating a Strong Password

Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP) recently announced the findings of a ZoneAlarm survey, which revealed that 79 percent of consumers use risky password construction practices, such as including personal information and words. The survey also revealed that 26 percent of respondents reuse the same password for important accounts such as e-mail, banking or shopping and social networking sites. In addition, nearly 8 percent admit to copying an entire password found online in a listing of "good" passwords. Given these numbers, it’s no wonder that 29 percent of respondents had their own e-mail or social network account hacked, and that over half (52 percent) know someone who has had a similar problem.

The first step a hacker will take when attempting to break into a computer or secure account is try to guess the victim's password. Automated programs are also available to repeatedly guess passwords from a database of common words and other information. Once a hacker gains access to one account, almost 30 percent of the time that information can be used to access other sites that contain financial data such as bank account numbers and credit card information.

"Consumers need to be aware of the importance of passwords and the fact that hackers are getting more and more sophisticated in cracking them," said Bari Abdul, vice president of consumer sales at Check Point. "By creating a unique password for each important account, consumers create the first line of defense against online thieves who can't wait to gain access to critical data for financial gain."

To ensure consumers stay safe online, here are a few tips for creating a strong password.
  1. Choose a password that is at least eight to 10 characters long. This should be long enough to prevent brute force attacks, which consist of trying every possible combination of a password until the right one is found.
  2. Make sure your password is difficult for someone to guess. Do not use names of any kind, including your login name, family member's name or a pet's name. Also avoid using personal information such as a phone number, birthday or place of birth.
  3. Avoid words that can be found in the dictionary. With the availability of online dictionaries, it is easy for someone to write a program to test all of the words until they find the right one.
  4. Stay away from repeated characters or easy to guess sequences. For example: 77777, 12345, or abcde.
  5. Choose a password that is a mixture of numbers, letters and special characters. The more complex and random it is, the harder it will be for a malicious person to crack.
  6. Use fragments of words that will not be found in a dictionary. Break the word in half and put a special character in the middle.
  7. Choose different and unique passwords for each account.
  8. Change your passwords often. Even if someone cracks the system password file, the password they obtain is not likely to last long.

Convert FAT Disks to NTFS

You may have thought about converting FAT disk to NTFS. First, you should understand why you should convert FAT to NTFS.

You are asked to choose between three file systems for disk partitions on a computer running Windows XP: NTFS, FAT, and FAT32. NTFS is the recommended file system because it's is more powerful than FAT or FAT32, and includes features required for hosting Active Directory as well as other important security features. You can use features such as Active Directory and domain-based security by choosing NTFS as your file system.

If your choice is not NTFS, and you want to make your file system to be NTFS, what do you do? You should convert your present file system into NTFS. You can do it through the following ways:

Convert FAT to NTFS System by Formatting

You must back up your data and then reformat the volume using the new file system. However, this will take a long time. Meanwhile, the risk of data loss when converting FAT to NTFS by formatting is much higher than other methods.

Convert FAT to NTFS Using Command Prompt

Using this method, open the command prompt by clicking on "start" button. Go to "All Programs," then to Accessories and then click on Command prompt. Type the following on the command prompt window: convert C: /fs:ntfs. The above command, for instance, can be used to convert drive C. it is important to remember that this is a one way process and once converted, you cannot then convert back to the earlier file system.

Convert FAT Partition to NTFS with Partition Wizard

A Professional Partition Manager can help you to convert FAT partition to NTFS, and Partition Wizard has powerful functions in partition management. As a Partition Manager, this partition software is a comprehensive disk management tool with a range of powerful functions, such as resize, copy, create, format, convert, delete and explore partition, etc. Converting FAT to NTFS by this partition software is very simple. It can be finished with just a few clicks. You don't have to keep in mind the complex command nor bear the risk of losing data. The following is the screenshot of converting FAT to NTFS by this partition software:
And the good news is that Partition Wizard Home Edition and Professional Edition are totally free for home users and Professional users. You can convert FAT to NTFS with this partition software without any payment. In fact, convert partition is just a small part of this freeware.

DNS Settings in Windows XP

Sometimes you may want to override the default DNS (Domain Name Server) settings on your computer so you can specify which DNS server is used, or which IP address should be used for a particular domain. There are two ways to do this: Specify the DNS and map IP addresses.

(1) Specify the DNS to be Used

This method tells your computer which DNS to use for all your internet browsing. Most home users have this set to "automatic" and the DNS is provided by the user's ISP, but you can use any DNS you like (you can even make your own DNS if you're keen).
Before you start you will need to know the IP address of the DNS to use - if you don't know this you'll need to ask your system administrator or ISP.
To set your DNS, you need to find the Internet Protocol window.
For Users on a Dial-up Connection:
Go to My Computer>Dialup Networking.
Right-click your internet connection and select Properties.
A window will open - click the Server Types tab. Click TCP/IP Settings.
For All Other Users:
Go to Control Panel>Network Connections and select your local network.
Click Properties, then select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Click Properties.
You will see a window like the one below - this is the Internet Protocol window. Select "Use the following DNS server addresses" and enter the desired DNS server(s) in the space(s) provided.

(2) Map IP Addresses

This method allows you to create settings for individual domains without altering your main DNS preferences. This is useful if you don't have access to a DNS or if you want to specify the location of a single domain without interfering with any of your other online activities.
Open the following file in a plain text editor such as Notepad:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
The file looks like the one below. At the end of the file (in this case, under the localhost entry), enter the IP and domain you wish to specify. When your browser attempts to access a domain it refers to this file first - if the domain is found here then the specified IP address will be used. If the domain is not found here, then the normal DNS server (as specified above) will be used.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Service Pack 1 will start downloading to PCs automatically beginning in mid-April.

If you want to get the benefit of a year's worth of improvements right now, click the Start Menu, All Programs, and select Windows Update.

Below are reasons why you might not see Service Pack 1 on Windows Update:
Cause 1
You are already running Windows Vista SP1.

Cause 2
Windows Vista SP1 has not been released for the language of the language pack that you have installed.

Cause 3
Windows Service Pack Blocker Tool is used to block the delivery of Windows Vista SP1 from Automatic Updates or from Windows Update.

Cause 4
You tried to install Windows Vista SP1, and the installation failed with a known inconsistency in the file or registry structure.

Cause 5
A hardware device driver or device software was problematic when you updated to Windows Vista SP1.

The Windows Update service can detect the small set of device drivers and software that falls into this category. The Windows Update service will not offer Windows Vista SP1 until an update for the hardware device driver or the device software has been installed.

Cause 6
You have installed a prerelease version of Windows Vista SP1, and you must uninstall the prerelease version, or start with a new installation of Windows Vista.

Cause 7
You used the third-party program vLite to configure the system, and you may have removed required system components that have to be available for Windows Vista SP1 to be installed.

Cause 8
You see one or more updates for Windows Vista when you run Windows Update. However, you do not see Windows Vista SP1 listed.

World of Warcraft Warlock Leveling Tips

World of Warcraft Warlock Leveling Tips : "Damage per second" classes in World of Warcraft are often more difficult to level up, due to the nature of dungeon finding systems. Warlock leveling tips, as such, may not involve much instance play and require more world questing. Warlocks are a "cloth class," meaning that they absolutely cannot take damage or else they will be quickly killed. Unlike mages and priests, however, warlocks have the advantage of summoned units, so that they (like hunters) have a "buffer" against attacks.

Any warlock leveling tips start with the racial choice at the beginning of the game. On the Alliance side, most warlock classes choose a gnome or human race to begin the game. Gnomes have the advantage of escaping from traps, while humans gain additional mana regeneration from their spirit boost. The new worgen class, however, may be the best of all, because it allows the equivalent of a free mount at level 20. While mounts are not nearly as expensive as they have been in the past, it saves valuable gold for skills, professions, or items.

On the Horde side, undead races gain the valuable cannibalize ability, which can be used in addition to life tap for extra health and mana. Orc warlocks get temporary boosts to damage, while Blood Elf warlocks use mana tap for additional spell casting abilities.

The initial area you start in will go a long way when thinking of warlock leveling tips. Warlocks have no speed skill to compete with hunters or mages, making them reliant upon questing in large numbers rather than going from zone to zone. The Horde side of Barrens offers dozens of quests that can easily go to level 30, while the Alliance side of Darkshore and Ashenvale are right next to one another and will provide all the experience needed for awhile.

Warlock leveling tips do not always include professions, because professions usually take time out of the leveling process. All warlocks, however, should research First Aid for health regeneration. Cloth classes benefit from Tailoring: this is a stand alone profession, so they can complement it with a gathering profession (such as Herbalism or Mining) for extra money, or use it in tandem with Enchanting for extra stats boosts. Tailoring and Enchanting are the two most popular profession choices in World of Warcraft due to the number of cloth wearing units.

Dungeons allow for fast leveling, but they are a calculated risk. At nearly twenty minutes waiting time on some servers, a warlock DPS class will not quickly jump from instance to instance. Ensure that you have enough quests on hand to gain experience while waiting on dungeons.

Tips To Keep Your Computer Safe From Attack

When you have a computer, you start to accumulate important things. Photos, documents, files, and programs are all important components. You maybe have a music collection, a lot of important information and things that if lost, would cause a lot of heartache and misery. Sometimes people keep their entire school portfolio of work online or conduct businesses and work documents are protected on peoples’ personal computers. That is why a virus can be a really devastating thing when it takes over the system of a computer. It can cause serious damage and cause you to lose all of your work.

Sometimes when a virus gets really out of hand and causes all of your applications to quit functioning, you might have to do a system recovery, which will cause you to roll back all your settings to factory settings and you will lose everything you have downloaded, saved, done, and added to your computer. Often when a virus gets that bad, it is impossible to even use your computer normally to save your work or send it to yourself or anything because the virus has taken hold and made ordinary operations almost impossible.

That is why, throughout your computer use, even when it is in perfect health, it is important to make sure that you take precautions as though a virus attack could occur at any moment. If you have very important data, you need to make sure that you back up your files and keep them safe. Back up your photos, documents, programs, and information on a hard drive or some other kind of disk so that they will stay safe and out of harm’s way. You can even make a back up for your back if the material is extremely important. But regardless, keep your back up updated so that if anything ever does happen to your system, you will not lose anything.

Also, when you draft a document, make it a habit to email it to yourself so you will always have a record of it accessible somewhere. Using something like Google Documents is a great way to keep your documents stored somewhere safe so that no matter what happens to your personal system, you will be able to access your important work from any computer. Upload your photos to photo sites like Flickr or Photobucket and keep them there in addition to where they are stored on your system. That way, even if your system crashes, you will still have your photos and important materials somewhere where you can access them. Basically, make sure that everything on your system is somewhere else, too, and can be accessed. You never want to have to cringe when a virus attacks your system and you have to lose all of your important data and work.

Microsoft Delivers Hotmail Upgrade

Microsoft Delivers Hotmail Upgrade : Microsoft Corp. has closed the public testing period for Windows Live Hotmail and has begun a months-long process of migrating users to this major upgrade of its Hotmail Web mail service, the company will announce Monday. (To read a hands-on review of the new Microsoft Hotmail, check out our Today@PCWorld Blog: Microsoft Launches New Hotmail.)

Windows Live Hotmail, dubbed as the biggest Hotmail upgrade since the Web mail service's debut in 1996, has been tested by about 20 million users since Microsoft first allowed people outside the company to try it out in mid-2005, said Brooke Richardson, Microsoft group product manager for the popular e-mail site.

"It is safer, faster and has more features than Hotmail. It's definitely an advance for our current customers," she said. Windows Live Hotmail has a brand new code foundation which will let Microsoft add improvements quickly, something that had become a challenge with Hotmail's decade-old code base, she said. "It's a much more stable foundation for us to innovate," she said.

A major challenge for Microsoft will be to convince long-time Hotmail users that the upgraded version is worth switching to, said Van Baker, a Gartner Inc. analyst. "Consumers get accustomed to things they use on a daily basis, like their e-mail service," he said. "When you make changes, sometimes it's a challenging transition for consumers."

Microsoft will not autocratically move users to the new version. For now, Microsoft will give Hotmail users the option to continue using the old version if they don't want to switch to the upgraded version. However, at some point, everyone will be unilaterally migrated over to Windows Live Hotmail, she said.

New users will be automatically signed up for Windows Live Hotmail but, like any user of the new service, they will get to choose from two user interfaces: a "classic" layout that closely resembles the old Hotmail; or the new interface, which was designed to look like Microsoft's Outlook e-mail and calendaring desktop application, she said.

Later this month, Microsoft will release a free software for linking Windows Live Hotmail with Outlook, a capability the company previously charged for. With Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for MSN, users of the Web mail service will be able to access their account from Outlook, along with e-mail, contacts and folder synchronization for free. In the future, Microsoft will release a desktop client for Windows Live Hotmail called Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail will be the successor to Outlook Express and Windows Mail on Windows Vista.

But all these different names, brands and components leave Microsoft with a fragmented story in the Web mail market that could lead to consumer confusion, Gartner's Baker said. "Another big challenge is to manage this message," he said.

In terms of security improvements, each e-mail message carries a "safety bar" which indicates whether the message came from a known, unknown or potentially fraudulent sender. Spam protection has also been enhanced. Windows Live Hotmail also has a mobile version so that its estimated 280 million users can access the service from cell phones and handheld devices with a Web browser.
